1969. For anyone even vaguely familiar with anything musical, 1969 was the year of the greatest music festival of all time…WOODSTOCK. Now, forty years removed from that historic event that changed the face of music forever, Woodstock’s anniversary is right around the corner.
That’s right, this coming weekend, August 15th to 18th, 2009 will mark just a decade shy of a half century anniversary from the three day extravaganza that saw the likes of Janis Joplin, The Grateful Dead, Credence Clearwater Revival, Santana, the Who, and Jimi Hendrix, among others, grace the stage erected at Max Yasgur’s farm in Bethel, New York. (Strangely enough the festival was not held in its namesake town, which was merely an hour and a half drive from the site at Yasgur’s.)

You have to admit it would be great to visit the hallowed musical grounds where Hendrix improvised his infamous rendition of the star spangled banner, after just having snapped his high-E string in the midst of playing “Red House” and continuing on. Luckily, the Bethel, New York site of 1969’s Woodstock, at Max Yasgur’s farm, is only about fourteen and a half miles, and within an hour drive, of the Shandelee Lake Inn.

So, for anyone looking to make a musical exodus and pay homage to the greatest music festival ever held, lodging is fairly close at the Shandelee Lake Inn. The actual town of Woodstock is roughly an hour away, east of the Shandelee Lake Inn, and either venue is full of the rich musical culture and history that defined that festival and, more notably, that era.

Visiting the site of 1969’s Woodstock at Yasgur’s Farm…proof that there is plenty to do for anyone and everyone visiting the Catskill Mountains and the Shandelee Lake Inn.
